Art
Intent
At Howbridge Infant school we believe that learning within art, craft and design stimulates creativity and imagination. We provide visual, tactile and sensory experiences. In KS1 we provide a high-quality art and design education, which inspires, engages and challenges children . This enables pupils to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form and pattern. Children become involved in shaping their environment through art and design activities, involving different creative techniques. They will explore ideas through the work of artists and designers.
Across the age range children will:
– Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
– Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
– Evaluate and compare creative works.
– Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and develop their own opinions and preferences.
Implementation
At Howbridge Infant School we pride ourselves on providing a rich, high quality and stimulating environment to inspire creativity.
In Reception, art and creative activities are often cross-curricular and linked to our themes to ensure relevance and context. The focus is on exploration of techniques and materials and learning to use a range of tools effectively. We ensure children are introduced to and provided with opportunities to apply these skills in purposeful continuous provision.
In KS1 art is taught weekly or fortnightly and the children cover an art topic every term. The topic allows children to explore different skills and techniques and progression to be built upon. The teaching is a predominantly skills-based curriculum, which covers drawing, painting, printing, 3D and collage. All KS1 pupils have an art sketchbook which allows them to explore and develop their skills showing progression. Children are introduced to a wide range of artists, from different backgrounds and artistic styles. This provides inspiration and encourages them to express their own views and opinions about works of art. Children are encouraged to evaluate their own and their peers’ creations. We celebrate effort, progress and achievement in art through feedback and displays.
Impact
All pupils have equal opportunity to access new skills in drawing, painting, printing, 3D and collage. They are able to develop their own individual creativity and confidence so that they make good progress. The majority of pupils achieve age related expectations and are able to demonstrate using these tools or skills in other areas of the curriculum.
Disadvantaged Pupils
Pupils develop problem solving skills and attributes. Art is also used for a means of emotional support to encourage better wellbeing. These tools can be used beyond school into adulthood.
SEND
These pupils are given scaffolded support so that they can access the Art curriculum and gain a sense of achievement. Some pupils are able to excel in this subject.
