Our Amazing Topics
In Year 2 we have great fun learning through various exciting topics. Our topics include:
- Explorers
We will learn about the continents and oceans and will practise locating these on a map. We will also learn about the equator and how this affects the weather in different parts of the world. We will also learn about animals and their habitats. As part of our history topic we will be learning about different explorers including Jessica Watson and Christopher Columbus
- A look at London
In this topic we will learn about the events and significant people from The Great Fire of London. The children will have the opportunity to role play what happened and will compare London from 1666 to London today. In Science we will learn about materials and their suitability for different purposes depending on their properties. We will explore London landmarks in geography and design and create our own bridges and structures in designs and technology.
- The Owl who was afraid of the dark
In this topic we will be exploring microhabitats and using the story of ‘The owl who was afraid of the dark’ to support this. We will be learning about different food chains and making a study of our local environment in the school grounds and beyond. We will be exploring different mechanisms and making our own bird boxes.
- Pirates
During this topic we learn about pirates and pirate ships. We will find out about famous pirates using search engines and learn about the different jobs they had onboard. We will also learn about seasides and the different features of the coastline. We will then compare seaside holidays from the past to today. We will do this by being history detectives and spotting the differences using sources such as photographs and newspaper articles.
