PE

Intent

Children will be taught a high quality physical education curriculum which inspires them to succeed. They will be competent and confident to master fundamental movement skills so that they can perform in a variety of ways, independently and with others. This includes competitive sports and other physically demanding activities to extend their agility, balance and coordination. As a result, all children will value the importance of leading healthy and active lives.

‘Stay happy, keep healthy and be active. If you believe you will achieve.’ Howbridge Infant School PE motto written by The Health Busters.

Implementation

All classes have 2 hours of high quality Physical Education per week. These lessons are taught by the class teachers and we also have a Sports Coach who teaches in our school alongside the teacher for one of the lessons.

In addition to the regular PE lessons children are encouraged to be physically active during active playtimes, outdoor learning lessons, Children’s Health Project sessions and exploratory play.

Knowledge and skills are progressive and mapped out on the whole school curriculum plan. Skills are revisited across the year and across the key stages.

Lessons are planned using Development Matters and the National Curriculum. Units of work are organised so that the curriculum is broad and engaging to ensure that children’s agility, balance and coordination is developed. We also draw upon the PE scheme Get Set 4PE and the Children’s Health Project for weekly progressive lessons. Regular assessments are made to ensure that all children are on track to meet the expectations for their age.

Impact

Through dedicated PE lessons, all pupils are equipped with the skills they need to achieve the end of key stage expectations. Most pupils reach the intended end points for each unit taught.
