Intent

Pupils at Howbridge Infant School will:

  • become confident, resilient and independent mathematicians.
  • be able to develop their mathematical understanding, drawing on prior knowledge and skills to help them solve problems.
  • understand the relevance of mathematics in the wider world and be able to use these skills in everyday contexts.
  • be fluent when recalling mathematical facts.
Implementation

At Howbridge Infant School we implement this by:

  • planning and implementing a varied and creative curriculum.
  • ensuring all topics are covered and revisited throughout the academic year, allowing time for children to build upon existing knowledge.
  • using curriculum objectives to plan and assessing against these in lessons.
  • teachers completing formative assessments to check coverage across the year and children’s attainment in specific areas.
  • marking in the moment with the children to allow them time to address misconceptions quickly and effectively.
  • encouraging Maths learning to be continued at home (home workbooks, suggested online resources).
  • ensuring all children are challenged throughout lessons and using careful questioning to deepen mathematical understanding.
  • working alongside the local MathsHub to ensure training is up to date and to help implement new initiatives.
  • implementing the Mastering Number Program in both Reception and KS1.
  • planning Maths as a team to share best practice.
  • carefully modelling methods and strategies to the children to show the aspirational examples.
  • carrying out half termly pupil progress meetings in year group teams and with Headteacher and Deputy Head/SENcO to track progress and attainment.
  • carefully analysing where additional support is best suited following assessments in Maths.
  • awarding Maths Masters certificates to celebrate the children striving to do their best and showing a good attitude towards Maths learning.
  • using working walls in classrooms to display effective methods, appropriate vocabulary and helpful tools for children to use in a lesson.
  • ensuring good quality resources are available to support the teaching of Maths.
  • making sure additional support and interventions are in place to support children from different groups.
Impact

The impact on learning and achievement in Maths at Howbridge Infant School is:

  • that children make at least the expected progress no matter their starting point or group.
  • that the majority of children will reach the expected standard by the end of the academic year.
  • that children feel comfortable taking risks in Maths to solve problems using their prior knowledge to help them.
  • that children have a positive attitude towards Maths and feel they are able to achieve.
  • that children can talk about their understanding using mathematical vocabulary and practical examples to help them.
