Design and Technology

Intent

Our intent is for all children to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for Design and Technology. We want children to be able to solve problems as individuals and as part of a team and to respond to a design brief with a range of ideas and systems.  Children should be able to combine practical skills with other needs such as function and aesthetics, and evaluate their work in a critical manner. We want children to be able to explore and experiment with a variety of materials and tools, confidently applying them to their work. Pupils will experience fun and engaging lessons which give them opportunities to build on skills that they have learnt previously. Each DT unit in Year 1 and 2 follows the structure of design, make and evaluate.

Implementation

In each year group, key areas of Design and Technology are revisited through new projects that require the use of developing progressive skills, knowledge and technical vocabulary which are more challenging. Each year group has comprehensive medium term plans and detailed lesson plans which outline and teach the specific knowledge and skills required.  At the end of each unit, teacher assessment is recorded to review pupils’ progress. In KS1, children have a topic book, where their individual ideas and evaluations of products are recorded when appropriate, as well as in class floor books which contain quotes and pictures from class and individual discussions.

Impact

All pupils have equal opportunity to access new skills and demonstrate their growing knowledge and confidence so that they can enjoy the subject and make good progress. The majority of pupils achieve age related expectations in DT and can apply their skills and knowledge of using tools in other areas of the curriculum.

  •       DP

As designers, pupils will develop problem solving skills and attributes, eg. resilience, they can use beyond school and into adulthood.

  •       SEND

These pupils are given scaffolded support so that they can access the DT curriculum and gain a sense of achievement by completing the DT process of design, make and evaluate.
