Computing

Intent

At Howbridge Infant School we strive for all pupils to be empowered with the Computing skills and knowledge they require to understand and contribute to the world around them. We provide a creative and engaging Computing curriculum to teach Digital Literacy (using, expressing and developing their ideas through technology), Information Technology (creating programs) and Computer Science (learning how digital systems work and how to use this when programming). All pupils are given the opportunity to use a variety of software and hardware to undertake enjoyable and engaging tasks. As active participants in a digital world it is essential that all pupils have the knowledge and confidence to keep themselves safe online and to behave in an age appropriate way.

Implementation

Computing knowledge and skills is taught in all year groups. In Reception the children are provided with a range of opportunities to develop their Computing skills and knowledge and to prepare them for the curriculum ahead. All pupils have access to portable devices such as iPads and Chrome books.

In Key Stage 1 the children participate in discrete Computing lessons. This is taught by the class teacher and includes an online safety element. Class teachers follow the Teach Computing curriculum and each unit of work lasts for half a term. The units are progressive in skills and knowledge between year groups. In Years 1 and 2 pupils will be taught Computing systems and networks, two units on Creating media, two units on Programming and Data and information. The unit overviews then feed into weekly lessons.

The school is part of the local Computing hub and Computing CPD is delivered by Subject Matter Experts and is taught through staff meetings. The Computing subject team staff also have informal discussions linked to this subject.

Pupil progress data is collected half-termly by the class teacher and this is recorded on the school’s Sonar tracking system. This data and the progress of disadvantaged groups is regularly monitored by the class teacher and subject leaders.

The Computing subject leader also delivers half termly meetings with the class’s e-safety representatives. These meetings discuss a range of e-safety aspects and representatives share important information discussed with their class.

Impact

At Howbridge Infant School, the Computing curriculum is inclusive. By the end of Key Stage 1 pupils will know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the Key Stage 1 programme of study. Pupils will also be prepared for their next stage of learning. Teachers encourage high engagement and interest of the subject to ensure they develop their knowledge, skill and understanding providing them with a solid base for further study, work and a successful life.

Disadvantaged pupils

High expectations are set for disadvantaged pupils to ensure they make progress equal to that of other pupils. Teacher provide opportunities for disadvantaged pupils to access a range of computing software and hardware resources in lessons.

SEND pupils

Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities will have their knowledge and understanding of Computing concepts assessed compared with their starting points. Progress may be recognised through formative assessment and verbal communication with support adults. Any specific resources/equipment will be purchased through ECH Plans or the school’s budget.
