History
History
Intent
At Howbridge Infant School our aim is to inspire children to want to find out about the past and how it can shape our present and future. Children will be given opportunities to explore their own past, the past of those around them and looking further back to learn about the history of significant events and people from the past. Children will learn how to make observations about events that have happened and how they can compare to our own lives. In Reception children will investigate their own and their families history and how life has changed for them as they have grown. In KS1 children will learn about the local history of Witham and the wider world. Through our diversity work children will explore the important events and significant people of black heritage, those with disabilities and different genders from both Great Britain and the world around us. Children will be able to recall important events and dates and understand chronology. Throughout the school year historical events and historical figures will be placed on a timeline.
Our curriculum will provide children with opportunities to build on their previous years knowledge and link people and events. They will learn to ask and answer questions and be inspired to explore events and people further through in school workshops, school trips, research activities and group work when opportunities arise.
Implementation
Through careful planning, teaching and assessment teachers support pupils to build on previous knowledge and apply that knowledge as skills.
In Reception, teaching activities and learning objectives are taken from the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We strongly believe that children learn best through self initiated and supported play. Lots of opportunities for role play and whole class and group speaking and listening activities.
In Key stage 1 teaching is based on The 2014 National Curriculum for History. Planning progression is planned within the Curriculum Foundation Subject map and teachers plan lessons that are engaging and exciting for the children, encouraging a love for the subject. A range of resources including artefacts, chrome books for research, large range of books will be used to support their learning.
Pupil progress data is collected half-termly by the class teacher and this is recorded on the school’s Sonar tracking system. This data and the progress of disadvantaged groups is regularly monitored by the class teacher and subject leaders.
Impact
By the time all children leave Howbridge Infant School they will:
- Have a good understanding of their own history and of those around them.
- Have an extensive base of historical knowledge and vocabulary.
- Have learnt about various changes within living memory; revealing aspects of how lives have changed.
- Have learnt about events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally (for example, the Great Fire of London, the first aeroplane flight or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries).
- They will be able to recall information about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements; comparing aspects of life in different periods.
- Recall significant history events, people and places in their own locality.
- Be able to ask and answer questions about the past, seeking to understand how events and people from the past have shaped our own present and our future.
Disadvantaged Pupils
High expectations are set for disadvantaged pupils to ensure they make progress equal to that of other pupils. Teachers encourage high engagement and interest in the subject to ensure pupils develop their knowledge, skills and understanding, providing them with a solid base for future life.
SEND
We aim to set suitable learning targets, respond to pupils’ diverse needs and overcome potential barriers to learning and assessment for groups and individuals and follow the guidance set out in The National Curriculum Handbook, key stage 1 and 2. The children’s entitlement is based upon the programmes of study as defined in the Statutory Orders. All children regardless of race, gender and ability, will be given equal access to history.
