Reception Newsletter Friday 14th November

November 14, 2025

Our Learning This Week

Our focus this week has been Goldilocks and the Three Bears. All of the children enjoyed spending the school day on Monday with their teddy bear from home. They got to take part in wake up, shake up, phonics, snack, circle time and maths. We have enjoyed ‘hot seating’ the characters from our story this week and have been thinking about how they feel and what they are thinking or saying during different parts of the story.

It was a very exciting day on Friday as the children took part in their first Children in Need at Howbridge Infant school. The day was full of Pudsey Bear activities, fitness challenges and our annual talent show to finish.

Tapestry

We would like to challenge you this week to look at how 5 is made. This can be done by collecting objects from around the home or natural materials from outside. Can you see what makes 5? For example, 3 conkers and 3 acorns. 4 green lego bricks and 1 red lego brick. Try to use the phrase …… and ….. makes 5.

Upcoming Learning

Next week our focus phonic sounds are: z, qu and ch. We will also be looking at words that end in ‘s’. We will be reading words such as z-i-p, qu-i-ck, n-a-p-s and ch-i-p. It is really important that the children practise the sounds we have been learning regularly so that they can use them when reading and writing. We have attached a copy of the sounds learnt so far to this newsletter.

We will be continuing our theme of Goldilocks and the Three Bears next week and get the opportunity to try some porridge ourselves! We will try different toppings on the porridge and vote for our favourite flavour. We will also be learning how to sing and use Makaton to perform the song ‘When Goldilocks went to the house of the bears.’

In maths the children will be comparing groups of objects and begin to develop an understanding of when groups are the same or ‘equal’. The children will see how objects in 2 sets can be matched 1:1 to compare. Language will be a key part during our maths and children will be encouraged to use the phrases more than, fewer than and equal to.
