Year 1 Newsletter – 19th September 2025

September 19, 2025

English

We will continue our learning of animal groups linked to science next week by looking at ‘reptiles’. We will research facts which make reptiles different to other animal groups and then write a super sentence about them using capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and the conjunction ‘and’.

In phonics we will complete our review of phase 4 from Reception, looking at longer words and longer vowel sounds such as squelch, floating, starfish, windmill and treetop.

We will also be reading the following tricky words:

was, they, some, come, were, there, sure, pure

Don’t forget to review the sounds and tricky words in the front of the reading records whenever you read with your child.

Maths

Next week we will continue our number and place value learning by looking at ‘1 less’ than a given number up to 20, counting and comparing amounts in small groups and matching these amounts to the number of children, recapping the vocabulary ‘fewer than’, ‘more than’ and ‘the same’.

Topic

In art next week we will begin observational drawings by sketching the face of our friends. 🙂

During geography we will recap the United Kingdom countries and discuss their flags, capital cities and national anthem and flowers.

We have enjoyed learning about moving pictures in D.T. exploring books which contain sliders and moving parts. We will discuss what makes a good moving story book and make a plan of our own moving picture.
