English

In history we have been researching the life and work of Florence Nightingale and in our english lessons next week we will be creating our own fact file. We will be focussing on using all the tools we have learnt so far in Year 1, including capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and using the conjunction ‘and’ in our writing.

In phonics we will learning new digraphs (alternative spellings)

e_e (ee) as in these, even

ew (oo/yoo) as in stew, grew

ie (ee) as in field, shield

aw (or) as in straw, crawl

We will also be reading the following tricky words:

could            would              should                our           house

mouse           water              want

Have a look below to see some examples of the types of ‘real’ or ‘alien/fake’ words they may have to read. More information about the Phonics Screening Check will be given to you later in the year.

Real Words:

paw                like                cake                 leap

Alien/Fake Words:

frake             greep             larping              trooted

Don’t forget to review the sounds and tricky words in the front of the reading records whenever you read with your child.

Maths

In maths we will begin our work on 2d and 3d shapes. We will learn to recognise and name a variety of 2d shapes and talking about their properties. The children will be looking at ways to sort 2d shapes.

Topic

In science we will be thinking about the changing seasons, from autumn to winter. We will think about the clothes we might wear, how the plants and trees look and what the weather might be.

In history we will be comparing hospitals from the past and now. We will think about how Florence Nightingale has changed the way hospitals look and the way nurses and doctors work.

In music we will be learning about the rhythm in a piece of music and applying this when we begin to learn our Christmas songs for the singalong.

In this week’s mindfulness session, we will be exploring how we can use our senses to bring our thoughts back to the present moment. This can help to reduce stress (when our thoughts wander into the past) and anxiety (when our thoughts wander into the future).

Homework

Your child will either have a maths homework booklet or a handwriting homework book.

Maths Homework – Children will come home with a subtraction sheet to solve (there are two sides) – this links to the work we have been doing in class this week.

Handwriting Homework Book – Complete Pages 16 & 17

Please complete these in writing pencil.
