Year 1 Newsletter 27/02/26

February 27, 2026

English
We will be writing our own newspaper reports about the local hero, Benjamin Sainty. We will need to use the key features of a newspaper including writing catchy headlines, naming our newspapers, drawing pictures and adding captions to these, writing facts and answering the five questions: Who? What? When? Why? Where?

In phonics, we will be starting to review the following sounds in preparation for the phonics screening check:

o (oa) as in open, most

i (igh) as in child, tiger

a (ai) as in paper, later

e (ee) as in fever, being

We will also be practising the following tricky words:

Mr          Mrs             Ms               ask

Don’t forget to review the sounds and tricky words in the front of the reading records whenever you read with your child.

Reminders
World Book Day Thursday 5th March – children come to school dressed up as their favourite character.

Mr Godden will be running some exciting ‘taster sessions’ to give the children an idea of the great activities he will be doing in his new after school club. If your child has fun in these sessions and is interested in attending, there is a QR code in the classroom windows for more information on how to sign up.

Maths

We are completing our work on mass and volume. We will be measuring and comparing capacity through undertaking practical problems. We will also be starting our new unit on place value for numbers up to 50 by practising to count from 20 to 50 in different ways.

Topic
In our RE we will be comparing different Christian crosses and learning about their meanings.

In PSHE we will be exploring different household objects and sorting them into those which are safe and unsafe. Jigsaw Jack will be teaching us about ways we can keep safe around those objects which can be unsafe.

In Art we are learning about the artist William Morris. We will be planning our own nature themed tile designs, which we will be using in future lessons to make repeated prints of.

In mindfulness, we will be exploring our inner calm. Like a bottle of fizzy drink we all have bubbles inside of our tummy and sometimes when we feel a big emotion we feel ‘shaken’ and can feel the bubbles rising up. We will learn to use our breath to help us calm our bubbles on the inside.

Homework

Children will be bringing home real and fake words to add their sound buttons to, in preparation for the phonics screening check.
