Year 1 Newsletter 28/11/25

November 28, 2025

English

We will be researching the life and work of Mary Seacole and writing factual sentences about this significant historical figure. We will be focussing on using all the tools we have learnt so far in Year 1, including capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and using the conjunction ‘and’ in our writing.

In phonics we will be ‘growing the code’ using all of the new sounds (alternative spellings) we have learnt this term:

igh   ie   i   i-e

ai   ay   a   a-e

oa   o   o-e

ee   e   ie   ea   e-e

ew   u   ue   u-e

We will also be revising all of the tricky words we have learnt in Year 1 so far.

Have a look below to see some examples of the types of ‘real’ or ‘alien/fake’ words they may have to read. More information about the Phonics Screening Check will be given to you later in the year.

Real Words:

these                grew                field                 draw

Alien/Fake Words:

stroft             blurst             quemp              hild

Don’t forget to review the sounds and tricky words in the front of the reading records whenever you read with your child.
