Year 1 Newsletter 5th June 2026

June 5, 2026

English

We will be continuing our topic on fairy tales/traditional tales. We will be learning to retell the story of Rumpelstiltskin with special actions. We will then make our own story maps, which we will be using to help us write the story independently.

It is the phonics screening check this week, so we will be reviewing all of the sounds we have learnt this year for this.

Don’t forget to review the sounds and tricky words in the front of the reading records whenever you read with your child.

Reminders

Phonics screening check week beginning 8th June 2026

Please be reminded that full school uniform is required each day. This includes black school shoes, grey school shorts/trousers/skirts/pinafores and a white polo top or school summer dress. This is also to be worn with a blue jumper, cardigan or Howbridge fleece. If you need any support with providing the above, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Please ensure long hair is tied up with suitable hair bands, no fancy alice bands or clip on hair please.

Maths

We will continue to focus on place value for numbers up to 100. We will practise using a range of different number lines for numbers up to 100. We will identify one more and one less than given numbers through completing practical problems. We will also be comparing numbers with the same number of tens and using the correct mathematical symbols for this.

Topic

In science we will be recording our findings from the plant investigation that we have undertaken, and drawing our own conclusions from the results.

In PSHE we will be exploring how we change from being a baby, to a toddler, to a child, to a teenager and then to an adult.

In history we will be comparing different rooms in our homes to those in homes in the past.

In mindfulness we will be exploring resilience. We will be learning through a story and games that it’s important to never give up and to always try our best. It is not the winning that counts but the effort and determination that goes into everything that we do.

Homework

Please continue to practise the real and alien words sent home with your child.

They can add sound buttons underneath before sounding out and blending.

Please remind your child that if they sound and blend an alien word and it sounds like a real word, to have another go.
