Year 1 Newsletter 6th March 2026

March 6, 2026

English

We will be finishing writing our own newspaper reports about the local hero, Benjamin Sainty. We will be adding captions to our pictures, writing facts and answering the five questions: Who? What? When? Why? Where?

In phonics, we will be reviewing the following sounds in preparation for the phonics screening check:

a-e (ai) as in snake

i-e (igh) as in time

o-e (oa) as stone

ue (oo/yoo) as in cube

We will also be practising the following tricky words:

could          would             should               our

Don’t forget to review the sounds and tricky words in the front of the reading records whenever you read with your child.

Reminders

Red Nose Day – Friday 20th March

End of Spring term Friday 27th March 1.15pm

Maths

We are continuing to explore numbers up to 50 through counting by making groups of ten. We will also be learning how to partition any number up to 50 into tens and ones and be using number lines to complete simple problems for numbers up to 50.

Topic

It is British Science Week so we will be completing a range of exciting activities linked to this. We will launch this special event by having an interactive assembly on Monday. The children will then have lots of fun carrying out investigations linked to different Scientists throughout the week.

In History we will be learning about the Wright Brothers and writing a class fact file using our research about these significant historical figures.

In Art we will be using our nature themed plans from last week to make our own tiles in the style of William Morris.

In mindfulness, we will be continuing to explore our inner calm. Like a bottle of fizzy drink we all have bubbles inside of our tummy and sometimes when we feel a big emotion we feel ‘shaken’ and can feel the bubbles rising up. We will learn to use our breath to help us calm our bubbles on the inside.

Homework

Children will be bringing home real and fake words to add their sound buttons to, in preparation for the phonics screening check.
