Year 1 Newsletter – Friday 17th October 2025

October 17, 2025

English

We will continue to use our research to create our fact files about David Attenborough. We will be completing this work independently and remembering all the different tools we need when writing ‘good’ sentences such as capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

In phonics we will continue to assess the children’s understanding of the last 5 weeks of phonics. We will also be introducing them to examples of the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check words.

Have a look below to see some examples of the types of ‘real’ or ‘alien/fake’ words they may have to read. More information about the Phonics Screening Check will be given to you later in the year.

Real Words:

fork        bright        read            boy             farm

Alien/Fake Words:

bot           crark            hilp          sharm         fraik

We will also recap many of the tricky words we have been learning to read this term.

all               are              of            one     push        pull       full

here              today      no      go          so            my            by sure      pure

Don’t forget to review the sounds and tricky words in the front of the reading records whenever you read with your child.

Maths

In maths we will look at ‘addition’ and we will explore the different vocabulary we use such as add, plus, total.

We will explore how to record an ‘addition’ sentence and solve using counters and other apparatus.

Topic

In science we will be recalling all the information we have learnt this half term about the different animal groups, such as reptiles, mammals, birds, fish and amphibians. We will sort and draw images of these different animal groups.

In PSHE we will be thinking about the different ways we can help each other learn and to follow rules and routines.

In DT we will continue to create our moving pictures and then evaluate what went well and what we could improve.
