Year 1 Newsletter Friday 22nd May 2026

May 22, 2026

English

We will be starting our new topic exploring fairy tales/traditional tales. We will be researching and comparing these stories and creating posters to show the key features including repeated phrases, characters and settings.

In phonics, we will be reviewing all of the sounds we have learnt this year in preparation for the phonics screening check.

Don’t forget to review the sounds and tricky words in the front of the reading records whenever you read with your child.

Reminders

Non pupil day Monday 1st June 2026

Phonics screening check week beginning 8th June 2026

Please be reminded that full school uniform is required each day. This includes black school shoes, grey school shorts/trousers/skirts/pinafores and a white polo top or school summer dress. This is also to be worn with a blue jumper, cardigan or Howbridge fleece. If you need any support with providing the above, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Please ensure long hair is tied up with suitable hair bands, no fancy alice bands or clip on hair please.

Maths

We will be starting a new unit in Maths with a focus on place value for numbers up to 100. We will practise counting up to 100 both in ones and then in tens. We will also be learning how to partition any given number into tens and ones.

Topic
In science we will be learning about the life cycle of a plant.

In PSHE we will be exploring the life cycle of both animals and humans.

In geography we will be finding out about different types of homes linked to our work on fairy tales/traditional tales.

In mindfulness we will be exploring resilience. We will be learning through a story and games that it’s important to never give up and to always try our best. It is not the winning that counts but the effort and determination that goes into everything that we do.

Homework
Children will be bringing home real and fake words to add their sound buttons to, in preparation for the phonics screening check.
